By now, everyone knows that a headline determines how many people will read a piece, particularly in this era of social media. But, more interesting, a headline changes the way people read an article and the way they remember it....By drawing attention to certain details or facts, a headline can affect what existing knowledge is activated in your head.If you watched the West and Letterman interview, then you know none of the abovedo justice to the entirety of the conversation.
There's a humanity in listening to and watching someone talk. There's meaningful information conveyed in their voice, their body language, their face. These things can add warmth, reveal vulnerability, provide humor, showcase intelligence, expose just how serious or facetious someone is. Think about the difference between reading lyrics on a page. Versus listening to the song. Compared to being front row at a live performance.
How many people only experience Kanye through headlines? Or a brief clip? Or when someone they follow on social media comments about him? If most of your understanding of someone is from what other people tell you, do you really know them? This is the question I keep coming back to after the reaction to West in 2018. So much of the backlash came from a handful of tweets, a couple pictures with the crimson MAGA hat on, and a clip from an interview given to TMZ when Kanye seemed to be in the midst of a manic episode. In the wake of those things, many declared that Kanye was no longer the person he had been.
