Seattle transfer Darrion Trammell has been told his whole life that he's too small to play Div. I basketball
Height on basketball rosters often reflects hope more than reality, and at several stops along Darrion Trammell’s winding basketball journey he was offered to be listed at 6 feet, the aspirational default size for anyone under it. He refused.
He played for the powerhouse Oakland Soldiers travel team that featured James Akinjo and eight other Div. I prospects. Trammell sat on the end of the bench. Some tournaments, he never got off it.He went to City College of San Francisco instead, a JC. “When I got there, I knew this was just the first step,” says Trammell, who would start the next 49 games and reach double figures in 45. “I had bigger dreams. I had a lot to prove to the world. People back home knew I was good enough, I knew I was good enough, but, I mean, it was bigger than that for me. I was always in the gym, always working, always watching film, trying to get better, trying to get better.
He fit in. Everyone else had similar stories. Everyone else was in the JAM Center practice facility at 7 a.m. getting shots up. Trammell didn’t keep it. Didn’t need to. The words are chiseled in his psyche, fuel rods in a nuclear reactor.
