A Clean Air GM spokesperson said that 'cleaning up the air our residents breathe is a priority for Greater Manchester'

More than 200 people in Greater Manchester may have died due to air pollution since the Clean Air Zone was supposed to start, campaigners have claimed. The controversial scheme which was set to come into force last year before it was delayed could have also prevented 496 days spent in hospital due to respiratory conditions if it cut pollution as intended, they argue.

The letter expresses concern about children with asthma having to breathe in the air pollution from ‘stinky exhausts’ and encourages drivers to ‘ditch diesel’. The letter reads:

Dr Winter, GP Partner at Bodey Medical Centre in Fallowfield, said: "Manchester has poor respiratory health compared to many areas of the country. And whilst a lot of work is being done across the city in healthcare to try to improve our lung health, we know that increased exposure to air pollution negatively affects the developing lungs and brains of babies and children. Children, older people and those with existing lung diseases are some of the worst affected by air pollution.

Instead of charging drivers, they have proposed an 'investment-led' scheme in which owners of non-compliant vehicles are offered funding for upgrades. But earlier this year, the government asked for more evidence that this approach would work.
