Towering over Cape Town and offering some very popular trails is one of Cape Town’s greatest icons – Lion’s Head. A hike up the mountain is an absolute must for visitors and locals alike, but there are a few things you need to know before you conquer the beast.

Cape {town} Etc’s Murray Swart has compiled a guide on how to get the most out of your visit to this incredible attraction, from the start to the scenic summit.Start – The Lions Head hike starting point is at the parking lot, located on the route to Lion’s Head and Signal Hill. To get there, take the Kloof Nek Road turn-off and follow the signs to the parking lot. From there, the trail to the top of Lion’s Head begins, offering hikers stunning views of Cape Town and its surroundings.

Depending from person to person and the amount of time spent at the summit, the hike will take between two and three hours as the lions head hiking trail winds its way from the parking to peak. Some rock scrambling is required near the top but metal ladders and climbing chains make this relatively simple for weary legs.

While the Lion’s Head hike distance is relatively short, just under 5 km round trip, it is quite steep and includes some sections that require chains and ladders for assistance. For those who have a fear of heights, it’s recommended to take the roundabout footpath to avoid the more intense sections of the trail.Full moon hikes on Lion’s Head are highly recommended but don’t forget to bring your lamp and keep it safe.
