TheLastOfUsHBO is HBO’s all-new take on the apocalypse, and stands out as the platform's first major post-dragon genre effort. Here’s how the first episode of the show plays out:
At first, the only thing Joel has in common with Ellie is a mutual distrust of the Fireflies; he doesn’t exactly approve of his brother’s relationship with the organization, and Ellie’s not exactly thrilled with them for locking her up for days on end. But their paths collide all the same when Joel and Tess, on a mission to track down a battery , wind up at Firefly headquarters.
On paper, the assignment’s simple enough. Boston’s big, but not so big that a jaunt across the city should cause too much trouble, right? Wrong. For one thing, there’s the infected to consider.quickly establishes that anyone bitten by someone infected with Cordyceps will inevitably turn into a monster themselves, following the basic principles of the zombie genre. What’s more, there’s another basic principle of the zombie genre to consider: that the man poses just as much menace as the monster.
Initially, it looks like Joel, Tess, and Ellie have encountered a best-case scenario, considering that Joel is this soldier’s drug dealer. But that familiarity doesn’t amount to much when Cordyceps is on the line. The soldier scans all three of them for signs of infection, the tension mounting with each passing test. The standoff escalates even further as Joel reflects on a similar situation twenty birthdays earlier, which ended in the death of his daughter.
Both Joel and Tess are ready to react to Ellie’s result the only way anyone reacts anymore: immediate and decisive eradication of the infected. But the defiant teenaged survivor rolls up her sleeve and shows Joel and Tess a scarred bite mark, weeks old at the very least. Cordyceps infections take root quickly, with bites “zombifying” their victims in a matter of hours.
