A new The Last of Us image highlights Joel and Ellie's relationship in the upcoming video game adaptation. Based on the award-winning 2013 PlayStation 3 game of the same name, the upcoming horror drama stars The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal as Joel, a hardened survivor who is tasked with transporting 14-year-old Ellie across a zombie-infected United States.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Shared via Empire, a newly released image from HBO's upcoming The Last of Us highlights Joel and Ellie's relationship. Seemingly gripped with fear, Joel places himself in front of Ellie, shielding her from the infected surely stalking around the corner.
The Last of Us' story begins on the eve of the outbreak, when the Cordyceps infection begins to spiral out of control and take hold of the world. In the ensuing chaos, Joel loses his daughter Sarah and carries a heavy guilt within him in the following decades. Unable to get emotionally attached to anyone else, his journey with Ellie challenges his stubborn demeanor. Although The Last of Us trailer shows Joel simply calling Ellie "cargo," he soon finds that she is anything but.
As much as Ellie needs Joel to survive the dangerous wasteland that is America, Joel finds himself needing her to regain some semblance of the humanity he lost after the death of his daughter. When Joel realizes what Ellie means to him, he also comes to understand that he will do absolutely anything to ensure that he will not lose her. With The Last of Us' premiere less than a month away, audiences do not have to wait much longer to see Joel and Ellie begin their fateful journey.
