Callum Riley was murdered after backing a pal labelled a 'grass'
Tony Adams is not a man who tolerates his status being challenged. A ‘big shot’ drug dealer, he oversaw his empire with an iron fist.
It was a petty feud, which ended with the tragic killing of a teenage boy and left loved ones devastated. A ‘lovely lad, with a good heart’, Callum was ‘protective of his family’ to the very end. The teenager and Adams’ son Niall Conaghan previously appeared to get on. Both were the same age and had jobs as groundworkers where they had met for the first time. They both lived on Heywood’s Darnhill estate, a small place where everyone knows everyone.
She became pregnant with their eldest while she was studying for her GCSEs. Conaghan had worked as a cleaner and a bartender. Adams did not have a legitimate job, admitting he made his money selling drugs. When he later returned home, Callum revealed the existence of £180 debt. His mum gave him £100 to pay towards settling it. Callum said he was not going to pay off the remaining balance because of the way Adams had turned up at his home.
It was in the boozer that rumours began to circulate about George Davidson allegedly being a ‘grass’, a piece of gossip which proved the first in a chain of events that ended with Callum’s murder. Adams went ‘sick’ at Davidson. An associate of Adams’, Stephen Kendall, showed Davidson a knife. A clear message had been sent.
Conaghan replied: “Come meet me then get ya man. I’m coming now.” Tensions were hotting up. And shortly after, words turned into actions.Adams, his son, a friend of Adams’ named Dale Heywood, as well as two other men, Owen Maher and Clayton Moores, got in a car which was driven to Atholl Drive. Shortly after arriving back at Atholl Drive, two young children were removed from the house. Adams knew that retribution was likely, and he began taking precautions.
Ms Marsland continued: "It's because of you. It's Tony. Remember the one who stormed through my house because of you.” She continued: “I have no trouble with nobody, neither does Nile . It’s you.” Callum was ‘fuming’ in the cab, Davidson later recalled. “I should have stopped him, but when Callum is on one, there’s no way of stopping him,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do.”
Returning to his then girlfriend’s home, Heywood said he needed to clear his head. They travelled to Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham, where the prosecution alleged Heywood may have dumped the knife which has never been recovered. Following his arrest the day after the killing at a house in Burnley, Heywood said: “I’m really, really sorry. I didn’t mean for it to happen. I’m really sorry. I really didn’t mean it. I am really sorry. It was self-defence, it was self- defence.”
“I had no job, no nothing,” he said. “I’m just saying, I’ve got no money. “He was saying ‘don’t worry about it’. There’s obviously going to be a catch here at some point.
