The Jayhawks brings eclectic catalogue of songs to Block Heater yyc
The band’s history didn’t get any less complex in the years that followed. “The other guy”, Mark Olson, briefly returned to the fold for 2011’s Mockingbird Time, which followed 2009’s Ready for the Flood, an acoustic-folk album recorded by Louris and Olson as a duo under their own names. The songs on 2018’s Back Roads and Abandoned Hotels were also anomalies.
“I was in a good mood at that time, let’s put it that way,” Louris says. “I tried to let go of the reins and it’s not easy. Now, I don’t know exactly. I was coming off of writing and doing my solo record and really hadn’t been focused on the band and it seemed like a good time to explore opening the door.”
At 67, Louris says he has lost interest in doing long tours, adding the Jayhawks will likely do 50 concerts a year at the most. He is more into “making new music than playing old music.” As for the band’s reputation as pioneers of Americana and alt-country, Louris says he never intended to be confined to any specific genre.
“Many times I’ve said I took the wrong turn at Albuquerque when I started getting into roots music,” he says. “I really didn’t grow up listening to anything like that. I was completely a Brit-pop and art-rocker and Kraut-rocker. But I discovered the soulfulness of roots music, traditional music and incorporated what was more my pop, English sensibilities. But it seems to be viewed upon more as a type-case, that we are traditional artists.
