Florian and I spent three months together in the back of cars going all across Germany, all across Berlin and outside all the way down to Dresden, and we talked about the scene quite a bit. I remember the moment being in the car and saying to Florian, “You know what? It’s the only way it’s going to work, if we don’t cut. We have to stay with her. The coverage that we do or the different angles, they have to be within the shot—but we can’t get caught doing it.
What you’re not seeing—if you spent time in Berlin and you know Alexanderplatz and you know this traffic circle, it’s extraordinary. The building that you’re looking at right now outside that windshield is a building anyone would recognize in Berlin going back forever. It’s so rich geometrically, with these big slabs of rectangular mass towering over one of the most famous traffic circles on earth. And we chose to ignore that.
