I propose a typographic change ✒️ RobDotHutton for ipaperviews
Of course Boris Johnson has nominated his father for a knighthood. In office and out of it, his capacity to find new ways to taint himself and those around him endures.
Admiring Conservative MPs used to explain intently that Johnson was a “Heineken” politician who could reach parts of the country that others couldn’t. These days it’s not in dispute that Johnson gets everywhere, but it turns out to be in the same way that the contents of a toddler’s nappy do. It’ll take the rest of the decade to disinfect all the parts of the public realm he touched.
Johnson’s proposed resignation honours are still being processed by civil servants, who presumably have to don protective gear first. Amay not even be the worst of them. Brother Jo already sits in the House of Lords. Surely sister Rachel wants something similar. Perhaps she’s holding out for Empress of India.
The right thing for Rishi Sunak to do would be to reject the whole list and announce a reform of the system. Sunak will be reluctant to do that, though, partly because he’s so far been shy of confronting his predecessor’s toxic legacy, and partly because he won’t want to tie his own hands. Patronage is handy for prime ministers. It might seem ridiculous to the rest of us, but there are MPs who will bite their tongues in the hope of a bauble. A knighthood is nice, but the big prize is a seat in the Lords, where you can collect a daily allowance and vote on laws for the rest of your life. Sunak, trying to hold a fractious party together, will be unwilling to announce that he won’t give prizes for good behaviour.
