For those who like faded seaside heritage, it’s still one of the classic British resorts: a gaudy confection of Vegas-style amusement arcades, funfairs, stripey deck chairs on yellow sands – all the clichés. Margate is home to the UK’s oldest rollercoaster, its smallest theatre and the largest salt-water tidal pool. Old chalk mines and shell-encrusted tunnels lie beneath the town’s Victorian terraces and Georgian squares.
Meanwhile, standby for another moment in the limelight: the seafront’s 30s Dreamland cinema has been cast in the leading role of Sam Mendes’Margate-Broadstairs-Ramsgate: these three Isle of Thanet towns just roll into one, joined at the hip by the swathes of suburbia that lie between the cabbage fields and the white cliffs of this nose-like Kent-coast peninsula – today an island only in name.
All three towns are served by Southeastern trains from London ; and Margate station is right in the thick of things – you can be on the beach within minutes of arrival.
