The Harry Potter books included a scene that established the rivalry between Lord Voldemort and Albus Dumbledore, but the movies left it out.
The Harry Potter movies cut an extremely defining book moment in Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort's rivalry. Of course, the films included the memory of Dumbledore's first meeting with the young Tom Riddle before he came to Hogwarts and Slughorn's memories of the boy during his school years. However, the Pensieve memories that revealed the years between Voldemort's departure from the castle and his emersion as the Dark Lord was left out.
When Dumbledore greeted Tom Riddle in his office for the interview, the professor had already heard about the rising Dark Lord's decision to use a new name. He also knew all about the group of followers he had begun to gather, known as the Death Eaters. So, when the newly christened Voldemort tried to flatter Dumbledore by praising his recent promotion, the headmaster wasn't having it.
The remainder of the interview was equally as pleasant. Neither Voldemort nor Dumbledore ever raised their voices and instead engaged in a battle of wits. They debated the morality of certain kinds of magic and the difference between friends and followers, and finally, Dumbledore outright denied young Tom the Defense Against the Dark Arts position.
