💬 aliciakearns via ipaperviews: This is intolerable and should act as a final wake-up call to clean up and totally rid London of illicit Russian funds
In 2018 the Foreign Affairs Committee recommended that the Government establish a register for overseas companies owning property in the UK and thepassed this into law in March last year. Yet more needs to be done. It is always easier to pass laws than to enforce them and a concentrated cross-departmental campaign is needed to root out and punish those abetting, enabling, and benefiting from the flow of illicit Russian money into London.
If we are to be successful in this endeavour, the Government needs to match its rhetoric with proper resources and reform by properly funding those bodies responsible, increasing their agency to punish offenders, supporting our Overseas Territories in their own measures, and putting in place greater protection for journalists and others who expose themselves to risk by exposing culprits.
