The GOP’s moment of truth on immigration | Opinion
But before Republicans go assuming that immigration is their issue to win, I present three things to keep in mind.trusted
Third, the Biden administration is changing its tune as Title 42 has ended and another surge is pushing across the Rio Grande. Earlier this year, the administration, moving closer to the right’s position on border security. The administration is sending 1,500 troops to the border. Politically, this could partially erode, or at least soften, Republicans’ critique that Democrats aren’t taking the issue seriously.
Invest in enhanced border security at the actual border with agents, fencing, technological surveillance, but also at points of legal entry and exit, and with interior enforcement, including E-verify. The Gang of Eight’s plan overwhelmingly passed the Senate in bipartisan fashion in June 2013. But House Republicans refused to bring it to the floor, pushing for a security package only. As a result, nothing got passed, including no security package, and our immigration challenges have worsened since then. There’s a widely held belief among Republicans that if the Gang of Eight didn’t pass 10 years ago, there’s no way a comprehensive solution would pass in today’s polarized Washington.
