On the wall of Susanna Reid 's Good Morning Britain dressing room is a framed newspaper story declaring the show so terrible it would be 'Cancelled by Christmas '.
It says a lot about the odd position Susanna occupies – half serious news journalist, half glossy sofa stalwart – that she was hosting the RTS ceremony in question too.'I assumed the hosting job was my consolation prize. Bill had been Susanna's mentor, patient, wise and kind as she learned her craft. 'His advice was, 'If you make a mistake on air, if something goes wrong, don't let it bog you down.' And I think sometimes in life we can over-dwell, can't we?' She stuck it, still damp, to that day's script. 'Though it's behind glass now,' she clarifies. Any other low moments she'd like to mention? 'As I said, I tend not to dwell,' she guffaws.
She's right. GMB is part of our country's conversation. I mean, who can forget the then PM Boris Johnson hiding in a fridge to escape from Piers and Susanna during the 2019 election campaign, and finally surrendering to an interview 1,791 days after GMB had last grilled him. 'I totally come to life at that time,' she says. After the cameras stop rolling at 9am, she checks social media to see 'what's set people alight', preps for forthcoming shows, listens to The World At One on Radio 4, then has a tactical nap for an hour or 90 minutes until it's time to pick up her youngest from school and cook a family dinner.
She socialises during the day with friends, and was in an on-off relationship with Steve Parish, the owner of football club Crystal Palace, a few years ago, but won't discuss her current status. 'I don't talk about that, simply because it is really important to keep some part of your life private.' 'Because it's absolutely true. For me, it's brilliant. I work alongside lots of people who are brilliant in their own ways and they're all brilliant differently so it never gets stale.'
And after that? 'The next ten years? I don't know! Don't you just do the work? Turn up every morning, fully prepared. Go on air. It's three hours of live television where you don't know what's going to happen from one moment to the next. Lorraine has been doing it for 40 years, that's the inspiration, right?'
