Gerry reveals the heartbreaking story of how he unexpectedly lost his wife in his introductory episode. The cameras capture Gerry at his lakehouse. He speaks about having met his wife, Toni, in high school. He married his sweetheart in 1972. They had a wonderful married life for 43 years.
Gerry's Wife Had A Kidney Infection “We had a real typical but beautiful life, full of love, full of activity, and as years went on, I retired,” said Gerry during his introduction per Bachelor Nation. He and Toni had a plan. They knew exactly how their dream house was going to be. Toni retired soon after Gerry in May 2017. They immediately bought their dream house and closed it on June 6th, 2017. “From June 6th on, it didn’t go according to plan at all,” revealed Gerry.
His Wife Passed Away Eight Days After her Diagnosis “So I took my wife to the emergency room on July 7th,” Gerry recalled. Gery's wife, Toni, died on July 15th, 2017, just a week after he took her to the emergency room. During his appearance on “The Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast cohosted by Bachelor in Paradise season 7 couple Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt, Gerry admitted his wife would have been “very pleased” about his Bachelor journey.
Gerry shared he has a picture of Toni in his walk-in closet. He visits it every night to see her picture. “It’s the only one now that I have in the house, and in the mornings, I see her picture, and you know, we talk,” he added. Sometimes he makes a brief comment, or sometimes is silent. But for the last few months, The Golden Bachelor has only one question for Toni. “So what do you think of this? Am I doing the right thing” Gerry asks his late wife.
