A 'girls only' cycling team from Khayelitsha will be participating in the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March:
As the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March in approaches, a cycling team from Khayelitsha is putting forward aEstablished by Sindile Mavundla and his partner Juma Mkwela, the team is the only all-girls cycling team in Khayelitsha.
The group of girls approached their cycling coach, Mavundla, to explore opportunities available for them. So, thanks to their curiosity and commitment, the girls are now representing both themselvesDespite fee requirements to enter the race, Mavundla raised money to secure spots for the team.“The idea of being involved in this tour came after the girls questioned us if there was another race to participate in besides cycling around Khayelitsha,” he said.
Mavundla explained the process: “from sending them a link about Cape Town Cycling Tour and knowing how expensive it is, we ended up doing a fund-raiser just for them to participate.” 17-year-old Iviwe Yako, one of the cyclists on the team, said that she “joined the team eight months ago and that was one the best decisions I ever made because I have since realised that I can also choose cycling as a career such as I have seen on the TV.”
