Shakar Hussain says his experience 'taught me a lot'

Shakar Hussain knows first-hand what it's like to fall on hard times. Shakar, 49, originally from Pakistan, came to the UK aged 10. He grew up in Cheetham Hill before his family settled in neighbouring Crumpsall.

That was until he met his now-wife Shabnam. "We went high school together, she saw me, we recognised each other, and she started talking to me and asking 'what's wrong with you, what's happened?" he said. Shabnam, 48, grew up in Oldham but her father moved the family to Manchester following the riots there. After getting married, the couple had three young boys but Shakar said they felt like there was 'nothing happening' in Crumpsall for families or any way of entertaining the kids without spending too much money.

Then when the pandemic hit, things ratcheted up. During the lockdowns, they were delivering 200 food parcels a day, seven days a week Shakar quit his job at a supermarket chemist and he and Shabnam now dedicated themselves full-time to the charity. Residents across the city are invited to nominate extraordinary everyday Mancunians who are making a life-changing difference to thousands of people through their volunteering and community work.
