"As pork, beef and chicken plants are being forced to close, even for short periods of time, millions of pounds of meat will disappear from the supply chain," John Tyson, Chairman of the Board of Tyson Foods, wrote in a letter published as an ad in the New York Times.
Tyson Foods, one of the U.S.’s biggest meat processors, didn’t mince words in a full page New York Times spread that ran Sunday, in which they warned, “the food supply chain is breaking.”
“Millions of animals —chickens, pigs and cattle— will be depopulated because of the closure of our processing facilities,” Tyson writes. “The food supply chain is breaking.” Story continuesHowever, the USDA has also been criticized for letting millions of pounds of food rot while food banks struggle to keep up with sky-rocketing demand. The Agriculture Department lagged behind other federal agencies in its coronavirus response, taking more than a month to “make its first significant move to buy up surplus fruits and vegetables — despite repeated entreaties,” Politico reported Sunday.
In the Times ad, Tyson also pledged to try and ease the financial burden of health-related issues for employees. They promised “waiving the waiting period to qualify for short-term disability so workers can immediately be paid if they get sick… waiving the co-pay, co-insurance and deductible for doctor visits for COVID-19 testing… waiving co-pays for the use of telemedicine.”
As of Thursday, at least 10 meatpacking workers and 3 food processing workers have died from the coronavirus and at least 5,000 meatpacking workers and 1,500 food processing workers have been directly impacted by the virus, according to the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which describes itself as America’s largest meatpacking and food processing union.
