While Rubiales’ knuckles have scarcely been rapped a “social tsunami” is afoot in Spain, where thousands of protesters have been taking to the streets on Hermoso’s behalf. Yet they have thus far failed to topple the man who has singlehandedly turned what had felt like a truly momentous period into one that exposes how little things have moved on.
These include: accusations last year of wrongdoing over a multi-million-dollar effort to stage the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia ; his uncle alleging that Rubiales had ordered him to use RFEF funds to pay for a private party with sex workers ;grabbing his crotch during the World Cup celebrations next to Spain’s Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter.
