Telltale takes a conservative step forward with their first game since the studio’s revival, with a prequel to sci-fi show The Expanse.

It included all the tried-and-true staples, including conversations with branching choices,scenes with quick time event prompts, and open areas with some optional collectables which might steer the story down another path. If the components under the hood were familiar, it was the space setting and polished animation that went some way to refreshing its tired bones.
In Telltale’s The Expanse, the story centres around Camina Drummer, a prickly, tough resident of the asteroid belt who starts out as an officer of a scavenger crew. When the current captain’s authority quickly dissipates, however, Drummer is thrust into command – only to discover how little she knows about her own crew and other external forces at play.
When it drills into its central character, the results are more compelling. One of the later episodes digs into Drummer’s troubled past with Anderson Dawes, a figure whose impact ripples through both this prequel and the entire series at large. There’s connective tissue via other returning characters too, who aren’t the obvious crowd-pleasers but well considered choices which elevate the experience as a genuine precursor to the series.
