That’s right, a new era of vodka production is upon us, and character is king. A quality bottle opens the door to a myriad of classic cocktails — from bloody mary's to martinis — and just about everything in between. So, dust off the torment of your teen years, because it’s time to give vodka a second chance., the origins of the spirit are a matter of contentious debate, with both Poland and Russia claiming it as their national drink.
Traditionally made with wheat or rye, more recently avant-garde distilleries across the globe have been experimenting with everything from potatoes, milk and grapes, to create unique takes on the old-school spirit. And though the UK’s thirst for appears unquenchable, the market for new wave vodkas continues to grow, with reported sales increases of 19.2% in the first quarter of 2022 alone.The camp is split when it comes to freezing vodka, though it should certainly be chilled . While freezing vodka improves the viscosity and achieves a richer mouthfeel, you do risk muting the more nuanced aromas.
Historically, low-quality vodkas would be kept in the freezer to mask the potent alcohol burn, but today – and, certainly, with our recommended bottles – the vodka should be naturally softer and, therefore, can be served straight from the fridge or your bar cart over rocks.
