Westminster and much of the rest of UK have spent the last week agog, watching on in horror as the country apparently slid towards economic disaster.
Another backbencher warned that voters’ first impressions of the new Prime Minister may never be overcome. “It’s a complete disaster and now the next election could be really horrifically bad,” the MP said. “It’s the first thing the public has seen from her, and it’s been terrible!” One senior MP, asked if they would be attending, replied: “Jesus no, conference hell, I’m too old for that shit.” And in a dig at Ms Truss’s notorious 2014 conference speech, they added: “Pork markets on the stage – there’s only so much one can take.”
There is already talk of letters of no confidence, even though party rules state that a new leader is safe from a formal challenge for their first year in office. But most MPs currently believe that changing leader for the second time in a year would look farcical.
