Cybersecurity headlines have been dominated by significant data breaches affecting major companies. The breach news cycles have been driven by breach disclosures and claims. In the aftermath, the media and others have been quick to assign blame in a quest for newsworthy stories. In response, victim companies are defensive, often pointing to factors outside their control.
When organizations have to issue public statements denying allegations and legal cease-and-desist orders to get inflammatory posts removed, this can take away the aim at the cybercriminals responsible. The importance of proactive PR during incident response should not be underestimated to avoid poor PR overshadowing the effectiveness of the technical response.Frequent communication during an incident is absolutely necessary, as context and new insight can evolve quickly during an incident.
