The Dow Jones Industrial Average Friday afternoon pared a sizable intraday decline to turn positive late in the session, reflecting a volatile period for Wall Street investors. The Dow was down by as many as 280.55 points, or more than 1%, but is now up 0.1% at 26,407.

Although stocks had been lower at the start of Friday trade, equity indexes took a leg lower after President Donald Trump said he wasn't ready to strike a trade deal with China and implied that a September meeting of Beijing-Washington trade negotiators may not take place. The S&P 500 index SPX, -0.32% also was off its session lows, trading down 0.3% at 2,929, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.64% traded 0.6% lower at 7,989.
