it was Harris who made the most of her televised time, Harris who managed to turn C-SPAN into compelling drama. That’s not exactly an endorsement—on-camera presence isn’t a guarantee of integrity or character, and Harris hasBut this is TV, and contestants that pop on camera tend to last the season.
Williamson also had a point, of course. Winning an election is entirely different from running a country, and in the recent history of the political-debate stage, policy proposals have proven a lot less effective than emotion and conviction. The candidates who stood out in the debates this week conveyed not wonkery, but spirit. Conventional wisdom tells me Sanders had an off night—not as bad as Biden’s, but not his typical vim and vigor either.
But perhaps Sanders has actually found his equals in Harris and Williamson—two other candidates who may have more or less palatable policies, but share his ability to tap into the nation’s emotional narrative. Sanders has that crotchety, lovable grandfather energy. Williamson is the odd duck you love to stare at, be it on a screen or at a cocktail party.
