The Crown is reportedly considering shutting down production on season 6 temporarily following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. First airing on Netflix in 2016, The Crown chronicles the lives of the members of the British royal family and the significant events of Queen Elizabeth II's reign in the second half of the 20th century.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY After it was previously announced that the upcoming fifth season could be The Crown's last, it was confirmed that the historical drama would indeed return for a sixth and final season on Netflix. Season 6 is expected to take the story into the 1990s, with both Prince William and Kate Middleton expected to appear in the season.
Considering that the entirety of The Crown revolves around the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the report isn't necessarily unexpected, especially considering the respect the show has for its royal subjects. People from around the world are currently mourning the passing of the ruler and celebrating her long reign, with Paddington even offering his condolences on Twitter.
Although fans of The Crown have yet to even watch season 5, any pause in production will mean a longer wait for season 6. The final season of the show is not expected to cover anything that has transpired beyond the early 2000s, meaning recent events involving the royal family, including the drama with Meghan Markle and the death of the Queen, are not likely to be depicted in the series.
