Lee described him as a "bit of a hustler," while Iwanyk shares how this twist got him excited about the series.
Basil Iwanyk: When you see John Wick and the movies, you think [Winston] is manor-born English, like a baron, right? What I love is the idea that he was a street kid who reinvented himself to be sophisticated to get out of the world that he was in, in working class work. And that over the course of like, 35 years, if we went that long, you realize that he kind of taught himself to be sophisticated. It's a classic.

With countless connections and an impressive ability to use violence when necessary, his role as an ally and confidant of John Wick makes sense. Although Winston seems to have reinvented himself of his own volition, it could make him a prime candidate for the High Table given his intelligence, cunning, and willingness to do what it takes to further his goals.
