The City of Cape Town, which often boasts through its governing party the DA how it cuts red tape for small businesses and encourages entrepreneurship, has quietly moved to evict traders of the historic Salt River Market.

The move makes nonsense of the DA’s argument that it isn’t anti-poor, writes Gasant Abarder in a new #SliceofGasant column.

This is the third significant strike in a series of anti-poor measures by the City. There are, of course, others that include the City entertaining complaints against the call to prayer at the iconic Tennyson Street mosque. But the most glaring attack on the people of Salt River for me includes:: How the City of Cape Town callously evicted the residents of Bromwell Street in Group Areas Act style to make way for the further development of the gentrified Biscuit Mill precinct.

It is the final straw for me – someone who spent most of my childhood in the area where my grandparents and parents lived. Not that I needed any further evidence that the DA was anti-poor, despite Helen Zille’s ridiculous statement that the poor in Cape Town were better off than elsewhere. What the City of Cape Town has done is unconscionable and incredibly cruel. They are acting against an economic lifeblood of the community and taking food off the table of people trying to eke out a living by selling fresh produce.
