Former city councillors Jon Burnside, Vince Crisanti and Lorenzo Berardinetti are all seeking different council seats in the Oct. 24 civic election.

“For a lot of people, it’s a hobby or a job but, for me, it’s a dream,” Burnside said of the position he held for four years representing residents of the old Ward 26.

“I don’t know anybody that’s called for a term limit of four years so I would actually say I represent new blood” on council, said the former Toronto police officer, meal delivery entrepreneur and, most recently, Toronto civil servant. He was hired in March 2020 to help launch the traffic agent program — nonpolice officials who oversee traffic flow through busy intersections — and then to the city office in charge of clearing homeless encampments, a controversial task which he says helped get people into homes, but he knows could trigger campaign criticism.

“The way I see it, I would say I’ve gone away and upgraded my skills because now I understand how the civil service really works, not how councillors think it works.” Burnside said he is hoping his candidacy will be endorsed by Mayor John Tory, but he has no guarantee.
