CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Black Keys have headlined plenty of big shows in the Greater Cleveland area. The band is widely regarded as Akron’s biggest breakout act of the past two decades.

“Dropout Boogie” is your 11th Black Keys album. It’s one of the most collaborative projects you put out yet. What was it like to incorporate so many different people into these songs? We were honestly thinking, being dropouts, the only jobs we might be qualified for would be a janitor and a high school chef. We just started playing around with that and then we started talking to our friend Jim Herrington, who’s a photographer. He started sharing with us these turn-of-the-century portraits that were taken, I forget who the photographer was, but he took portraits of everyday workers. Bakers and butchers, librarians, stuff like that.

It’s funny because, like, the 20-year anniversary from when our first record came out, but we started playing together when we were 16 and 17. We were in high school together and we started playing and it was just incredible. I don’t really know anybody else who’s had such a long working relationship with somebody, you know? The older you get, the [rarer] we realize it is. I mean, we both had the same middle school bully, for instance.
