Downdetector, powered by Ookla, has released its data for the biggest connectivity and services outages across the globe for 2024.
It also broke down the outages per region, with Middle East and Africa seeing reports split fairly evenly between local services and international ones.
While it is unclear whether this year was more interpreted in terms of connectivity compared to previous ones, a report from Ookla highlights just how important access to the internet has been in 2024, with any loss in connection proving detrimental in some cases. The aforementioned CrowdStrike featured in the biggest outages list too, with it being the second largest global outage according to Downdetector data. “While CrowdStrike is not a service most people think of,that rely on it , including emergency services, airlines, and ride sharing apps when a routine software update went bad on July 19,” pointed out Ookla.Looking closer to home, South Africa forms part of the Middle East and Africa aspect of the 2024 outages report.
