Africa Tech Festival may be entrenched in technology, but humanity is the star.
The end of the year marks the arrival of Africa Tech Festival. Once known as AfricaCom, the annual telecommunications conference has evolved to comprise a number of different events in recent years. The focus of the three-day conference is still very much telecommunications but also the ancillary aspects of telecommunications, including what it enables.
We can chalk a lot of that increase up to innovation in technology and myriad advancements in connectivity solutions but that’s not the only thing that made this and other advancements a reality.Speaking from a South African perspective, innovation is often hamstrung by legislation. For the most part, South Africa’s laws are old and while work is being done to update these laws for a modern era, this process takes a long time.
During a fireside chat, acting managing director of the State Information Technology Agency, Simphiwe Dzengwa noted that through partnerships with the private sector, it has established robotics programmes at primary schools and high schools. The acting MD was straightforward in highlighting that public-private partnerships are pivotal in upskilling the youth. It’s the sort of sentiment that’s rare outside of discussions such as these.
On Thursday, group chief executive officer and president of Cassava Technologies, Hardy Pemhiwa participated in a panel where CEOs offered insights into being a leader of a massive enterprise.The group CEO spoke at length about how leaders need to not only talk the talk but walk the walk as well. It’s all good and well to say that we need to invest in education but that’s an empty sentiment when it’s easier to put an AK-47 in the hands of a child than it is a degree.
