The viral TikTok account Sandwiches of History is home to some of the world’s strangest sandwiches.

Every day, Barry Enderwick makes a sandwich for lunch. For most people, this would not be a notable event. But the 55-year-old San Jose resident has an audience of more than 300,000 TikTok followers watching him do it. That’s because on his popular SandwichesofHistory account, Enderwick is making no ordinary sandwiches. Rather than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, he’s having a Depression Era peanut butter and vegetable sandwich.

“It almost feels counter to what a lot of social media is.” Watching a Sandwiches of History video does feel like a warm hug for the social media-rotted brain. To observe a middle-aged man with a wry sense of humor carefully prepare a sandwich, chew thoughtfully and then share his honest feelings on it feels exactly like taking a big bite of your favorite sandwich: comforting and satisfying. Behind the scenes, Enderwick’s filming process is as straightforward as it seems.
