Mmusi Maimane | The ANC must accept the fact its time as a liberator is up
On Sunday 11 February – 34 years ago to the day – arguably the single most consequential factor in South Africa’s transition to democracy occurred. Political prisoner Nelson Mandela was released from prison after spending a total of 27 years behind bars.
With Mandela's image on our TV screens, showing him being released and walking through a large crowd of supporters outside the Victor Verster prison, the world almost at once knew that the Apartheid regime was over, and a new era was on the horizon for South Africa. That one chapter to forget was closing and another, more hopeful chapter was about to begin.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
