The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare the Air alert for Thursday with smog in the forecast; the district is calling on Bay Area residents to work from home, bike, walk or take public transit, rather than drive. The district issues a Spare the Air alert when smog, or ozone, reaches a point where it can cause unhealthy air."Ozone can cause throat irritation, congestion and chest pain," the district said."It can trigger asthma, inflame the lining of the lungs and worsen bronchitis and emphysema. Long-term exposure can reduce lung function." Those who can be most harmed by breathing ozone include children, the elderly and people with asthma.
