A creepy doll, murdered barmaid and a crypt of skulls are just some of the eerie tales to be heard
It’s time to prepare for the spooky season and with Halloween not far off now, we’ve put together a list of some of the most eerie places in Northamptonshire. There are lots of haunted stories to be heard about locations across the county.
He is said to have lost his mind, remaining in such a state until he died. Nowadays, the crypt, which houses the remains of around 2,500 individuals, has been reorganised so that the skulls are displayed on shelves around the walls. There are other rumours of ghosts around the pub, including that it is haunted by a former barmaid who was killed by a lover in a jealous fit of rage. Others include a female ghost who walks out in the road at night.
It was relocated to the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Finedon, where presenter and Church of England clergyman Richard Coles attended. 20 years later, the doll was stolen from the church but its legacy is still felt today. The outlaw ran a gang of robbers and murderers who liked to rob country fairs and was sentenced to death by hanging after his capture. Catherall was subsequently tried and hanged in Northampton on July 21, 1826, but his ghost is believed to be one of many that roam Boughton Green by the ruins of the old church.
