In this remarkable debut film from Iranian director Panah Panahi, a road trip to the Turkish-Iranian border takes on the qualities of both tragedy and triumph, painting a quiet picture of family life at its most humane.
The car is a powerful location in Iranian cinema; if the mother’s scarf falls down or they listen to loud pre-revolution pop music on the radio, there’s no one to scold them. This little four-wheeled island of both strange freedom and domestic annoyance, grief and pleasure, is a wonderful cinematic expression of the full humanity of its protagonists. What a crying shame that it hasn’t yet been shown in Iranian cinemas.
Tenacious homicide detective Hae-jun finds a recreational climber crumpled dead at the bottom of a mountain. The widow, a beautiful, much younger Chinese woman, Seo-rae , is under suspicion, but Hae-jun forms a quiet infatuation with the woman, watching her through binoculars on stake-outs until she, too, knows he is watching her.
Although this is a story of murder and death, it is also one of tenderness. Park is far more interested in the pain of the living than those who are dead and buried.
