Better Call Saul always cleverly subverted prequel tropes, but it once took fan service way too far by giving into a cliché.
Better Call Saul is both a sequel and prequel to Breaking Bad, and though it usually subverts prequel tropes, one episode is guilty of leaning into the worst prequel cliché of them all. Over the course of six seasons, Better Call Saul became just as beloved as its predecessor, becoming more and more about the fascinating and unusual criminal underbelly of Albuquerque that was established in Breaking Bad.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Hector's Breaking Bad origin story was revealed in the prequel, as audiences learned how he ended up in a wheelchair and unable to speak, but Better Call Saul went an unnecessary step further. Even though bringing back all these characters creates several potential prequel problems, Better Call Saul managed to swerve all of them, except for one.
Lalo gifts the antique-looking Bell to Hector when Hector is out of the hospital but can't walk or talk. The bell is used by Hector to communicate, and it's the catalyst for both the most humor-filled sequences and the most intense scenes in Breaking Bad's entire run. It's revealed that Lalo murdered and tortured a hotel owner and kept the bell from the hotel lobby as a souvenir before burning the place down.
Better Call Saul Cleverly Subverts Most Prequel Tropes While chronicling the life of a bell was a clear low point for the series, Better Call Saul is usually extremely delicate and tasteful with fan service, and it has always cleverly subverted prequel tropes. Many prequels attempt to make audiences believe that characters who weren't in the predecessors will live, but Better Call Saul makes the fate of non-Breaking Bad characters like Nacho clear early on.
