Review: ‘The Other Two’ has reinvented itself in its third season, even as its characters remain stuck in their vainglorious ruts.

-esque pop idol—is a winsome, riotously funny look at the mechanics of celebrity.

The third season finds struggling actor Cary struggling just a little bit less: he’s filmed a role in a sorta buzzy indie calledand imagines his career will be transformed instantly. His sister, Brooke , is ensconced in the management team of their pop-star brother, Chase , though feeling the itch for more responsibility—morework at the center of the entertainment industry.

Cary and Brooke are still pretty bad people, but Kelly and Schneider shade and complicate that awfulness. Within the first seven episodes of the season , there are two bruising scenes of argument, in which Cary and Brooke are confronted about their self-obsession by people tightly enmeshed in their lives. It’s appreciated that, on occasion, stops to get serious and pointed, a shift in tone adeptly handled by Tarver and Yorke, who are giving two of the best performances in TV comedy at the moment.

It’s also heartening to see the show really enjoy its streaming privileges, particularly when it comes to Cary’s love life.is frank and clever about matters of gay sex—but not in a way that makes the gayness the core of the joke. Rather, the show simply isn’t demure about certain aspects of Cary’s relationship this season, with a cute but deeply annoying Method actor played by.

But that’s heavy talk for a show that is mostly loopy and buoyant, a rare laugh-out-loud pleasure in an era of comedy so preoccupied with anodyne niceness. There is a heart at the center of, one it is unafraid to show us on occasion. But the defining energy of the series is the zip and pepper of what many sitcoms used to be. What a fitting show—so mordant about Hollywood rot, such a gleaming testament to fine writing—to premiere at this very moment.
