Sunday morning. He played three seasons for the Bulldogs and opened his head coaching career with them in 2000-01, leading them to a 24-8 record and second-round NCAA Tournament finish.
“Butler is a special place, one that Barb, Ali, Emily and I each chose as our school,” Matta said in a news release. “.... There is a solid foundation in place and I’m confident that Butler will consistently be among the top programs in the BIG EAST. I can’t wait to attack the work we have in front of us and to be back on the sidelines at Hinkle Fieldhouse.”
Matta left after that season for three seasons as Xavier. Then he spent 13 seasons at Oho State, where his teams won seven Big Ten Conference championships and reached two Final Fours — including a national runner-up finish in 2006-07.Ohio State fired Matta in June 2017, with the coach saying health issues had affected his performance in recruiting and other faces. He has not been a head coach since, though he spent last season as an associate athletic director for basketball at Indiana.
Matta, 54, was twice a Butler assistant before taking over for the departing Barry Collier in 2000. After one season, he went 78-23 in three seasons with Xavier, reaching the Elite Eight in 2003-04.“The success that Thad has achieved at every one of his programs speaks for itself,” Collier said in the news release. “He is a championship-caliber coach and recruiter who brings valuable experience and contagious energy to Butler.
