by Michael Adkison"It's about interpretation," Creighton said. "And so sometimes the interpretation is easy to follow. Sometimes it's broader in nature, by its very intent and the spirit and intent of the law. And we'll have general counsel there for the universities that will be advising their particular administrations on compliance. We'll get to hear that in testimony, and we'll get the benefit of of hearing that as a committee so that we can make decisions.
Afterward, the committee is expected to take up public testimony. Several critics of the DEI ban have announced intentions or called other critics to testify on Tuesday. Notedly, UT Austin's President Jay Hartzell had previously said he felt the university was in compliance with Senate Bill 17, the DEI ban, by the January 1 implementation date. A CBS Austin reporter asked Sen. Creighton about the potential arbitrary nature of defining compliance.
