UT’s defense struggled to stop the run or generate a consistent pass rush last season....
Texas fifth-year senior defensive tackle Moro Ojomo, right, said stopping the run is the defense’s first priority.AUSTIN — There’s been a lot of talk this offseason about how Texas needs to improve its pass rush.
“We have to first of all stop the run,” fifth-year defensive tackle Moro Ojomo said. “I think we have the ability to rush the passer. But something that pisses me off about last year is just, if we don’t stop the run we can’t pressure the quarterback. We talk about the lack of sacks, the lack of pressure on the quarterback. Well, if the quarterback can run they’re a two-dimensional offense and we’re not gonna be able to rush the passer in that sense.
“At the end of the day, we’re trying to affect the quarterback,” Sarkisian said. “If we can move the quarterback off the spot, if we can get him to drop his eyes to where he’s not looking at the coverage, force late throws, force error throws. Those are all impactful plays for us and so that’s really what we’re looking for at that position.”
“We can’t overlook the ability to defend the run at that position,” Sarkisian said. “It’s not just about rushing the passer, it’s about setting the edge of the defense, it’s trying to minimize that C gap . But then it’s also when you can convert to a pass rush and get those one-on-ones on tackles, tight ends and running backs to disrupt the quarterback.”
There’s enough uncertainty up front that one or two of those newcomers could carve out a meaningful role this year as Texas tries to rebound from one of the worst defensive campaigns in program history.
