The Texas Observer is shutting down after nearly 70 years as a often-lone voice of progressive dissent in a largely conservative political landscape., is due to a decision of the nonprofit Texas Democracy Foundation, which owns the magazine. The foundation's board voted last week to close the Observer and lay off its 17 staff members, including 13 journalists.
It remained a progressive bastion in the coming decades, as Republicans began making inroads and eventually took control of state government. The Observer featured investigative reporting, criticism, and commentary from journalists including Billy Lee Brammer, Dagoberto Gilb, Jim Hightower and — most famously — Molly Ivins, the hell-raising humorist raised in Houston.
In an interview with the Tribune, Robert R. Frump — who had been running the Observer's business operations since June but resigned in protest on Thursday after learning of the vote to shutter the magazine — said that he could understand the board's decision, even though he disagreed with it. The Observer had, he said, struggled to adapt to a changing media landscape and proliferation of news outlets in Texas, especially with an aging reader and donor base.
