As a practicing OB/GYN and mother of a seven-year-old boy, I have seen countless mothers who put their children first but battle life stressors and chronic medical conditions, such as hypertension, depression or diabetes. They desperately want to get healthy but struggle with an agonizing decision: go to the doctor or pharmacy — or avoid those medical bills so they can afford to put food on the table for their children.

Many Texas mothers face this decision because they don’t have health insurance. They work for employers that do not provide health insurance or pay them enough to afford private insurance.providing the health insurance they need to visit clinicians, get necessary medications, receive preventative screenings , and obtain behavioral health services. Thanks to this insurance, mothers can manage their pregnancy and overall health. Once they have coverage, many start the process of getting their diabetes or hypertension or other issues under control.after delivery, this lifeline snaps. Under current state policy, their insurance coverage ends.

Cutting mothers off from coverage so soon after childbirth doesn’t just threaten their own health. It also disrupts their newborn baby’s health and development during the critical first 12 months of life. Children need healthy moms during and well beyond pregnancy.
