The Dallas County Juvenile Department is under state investigation for 11 cases of alleged child neglect, according to a court filing..
The department’s status report prompted a court hearing Wednesday in which Moyé asked the department’s attorneys how complying with the commissioners would impact the state’s investigation.Brian Hail, attorney for the Juvenile Department, said the commissioners requested records over a span of three and a half months, while the state investigation focuses on 10 days — April 14-23, 2023.
“The manpower or personnel required to do that would be pulled off if the court ordered it and yet we have two state investigations going on that have to be complied with,” Hail said.The commissioners’ attorney, Jennifer Richards, argued that while preparing the records would be a burden, the work would not be an impediment to handing them over.
The state will send the Dallas County Juvenile Board its findings, and either the state or the county board could direct the department to correct problems. If the department does not make changes in a certain timeframe, there would be repercussions.
