Breaking: Texas House debate on medical treatments ban for transgender youth delayed again
Democrats again successfully forced Republicans to delay debate on the bill, which prohibits transgender minors from receiving treatments like puberty blockers and hormones, back to committee.
Texas state Rep. Stephanie Klick, center, listens to House parliamentarian Hugh Brady during a point of order as SB14 is debated in the House chamber at the Capitol of Texas in Austin, Texas, Friday, May 5, 2023. SB14 would ban gender affirming health care for transgender children.AUSTIN — Democrats in the Texas House have again successfully delayed debate on a bill that would ban certain medical treatments for transgender youth.
During debate on the House floor Friday afternoon, Rep. Mary González of Clint raised a procedural tactic known as a point of order against the bill. She argued its analysis was materially misleading. While her point of order was ultimately withdrawn, Republicans agreed to send the bill back to committee.
This is the second time this week House Democrats successfully delayed debate on the contentious legislation. They were able to send the same bill back to committee on Tuesday using another point of order that argued an organization mentioned in the analysis was misnamed. The bill will be sent back to the House Committee on Public Health, which is already scheduled to meet in order to re-pass it late Friday afternoon. It would then need to be set for debate by the calendars committee, whose chairman said the bill will be back in front of the full House next week.
