The U.S. Supreme Court has indefinitely blocked the implementation of Texas Senate Bill 4.

FILE - Migrants who crossed the Rio Grande and entered the U.S. from Mexico are lined up for processing by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, in Eagle Pass, Texas. The U.S.

The supreme court had previously asked Texas to hold off for a few days. This time the supreme court has indefinitely blocked Texas’ sweeping border security law. That means Texas now has to wait for the high court to give them the final say on if and when SB 4 will ever take effect. That law, giving Texas authorities the power to arrest undocumented migrants, was originally supposed to take effect March 5 to coincide with the Super Tuesday elections. Governor Abbott insists Texas won't be sitting around waiting for the supreme court's decision. He says Texas can and will take action on its own to protect itself from what he's called an invasion of migrants at the southern border.

, "We continue building the wall, use NG to erect razor wire barriers to repel migrants & buoys remain in river.”But a federal judge here in Austin initially ruled the law is unconstitutional, raising the question whether individual states have the right to determine how immigration policies should be enforced at their borders. James Henson with the UT Texas Policy Project says, “There will be a lot more to question about this bill.

Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan is also reacting to the news SB 4 has been delayed again. On social media, “SB 4 would have served as the strongest border security law in the country, but now that tool has been robbed from our toolbox to America’s further detriment." But he is holding out hope the high court will ultimately uphold SB 4.
