Texas Republicans likely have the votes to outlaw transgender care for minors

Every major medical association, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychiatric Association, consider transition care medically necessary. The Texas Medical Association so far hasn't taken a position on this type of legislation, though it has previously opposed attempts to restrict or criminalize gender-affirming care.

Like Oliverson and other Republicans on the committee, Van Meter argued that the appropriate treatment for gender dysphoria is counseling. The committee also heard from Jessica Zwiener, an endocrinologist from Houston who treats transgender youths.
