A Texas death row inmate has petitioned officials to delay his execution so he can donate a kidney to a patient in need, according to his attorneys.
Doctors approved Gonzales as an organ donor last spring and determined that he was an “excellent candidate,” according to his attorneys. However, Gonzales was not a match for the intended recipient because of his rare Type B blood.and Michael Gross, a San Antonio attorney, according to court filings.The legal team has filed several other petitions in recent weeks in an effort to delay or stop the execution, court documents show.
During the trial, a psychiatrist testifying for the prosecution said that Gonzales suffered from “antisocial personality disorder,” and predicted that he would pose a threat to others in the future — a legal requirement for imposing the death sentence in Texas. “All of the scientific and societal rationales for exempting juveniles from the death penalty apply with equal measure to an older teenage defendant like Ramiro,” the petition states.12 Texans who narrowly escaped execution after being wrongfully convicted
